Spring 2010

This spring I picked up the monitor engineer job for Brendan Perry which started with a tour in March, comprising 20 shows over 25 days, across 14 countries from Portugal to Russia. This was followed with a headlining show at the Wave Gothik festival in Leipzig, Germany and a tour of Eire and the UK. I supplied a Lexicon PCM80 to process Brendan's voice.

Brendan's tour in March clashed with Gilbert O'Sullivan's tour of Eire. Despite being unable to tour with Gilbert, I did the technical pre-production, including a tour book, and supplied a deputy monitor engineer. The tour was a success.

In April and May I worked with Spitalfields Music on their Xenakis Pavilion project, a walk-through percussive musical instrument incorporating a soundscape generated by a motion tracker inspired by the music of Iannis Xenakis. My involvement was to record children performing music, under the guidance of professional musicians, and create songs and samples that were used in the soundscape. I supplied the recording gear used for the location recordings, and edited and mixed the material in my studio.

Finally, I have purchased some Radial equipment, a Pro8 DI rack unit and a Phazer unit, for use in my studio and on the road.

Winter 2009

Winter was the season for one-off shows, with The Real Tuesday Weld performing in Istanbul, Turkey and Edinburgh, Scotland, with me handling front-of-house duties. Scott Matthews performed a special one-off show with a full band at the Birmingham Town Hall, where I engineered monitors and provided an Alesis HD24XR to record the show. Emily Barker and the Red Clay Halo concluded a successful tour of the UK with a Halloween show at the Luminaire, London. I took front-of-house duties for this show and provided equipment to record it.

Gilbert O'Sullivan hit the road to perform concerts at the York Grand Opera House, the Manchester Opera House, and the Royal Albert Hall, which saw me production managing and engineering monitors.

Stacey Kent returned to Ronnie Scotts for a four-night residency, with me performing engineering duties at her request.

I picked up front-of-house duties for Right Said Fred, which saw me working on a couple of events including the Wave 105FM Christmas party at the Southampton Guildhall. I also started working as a freelance sound engineer at the Rich Mix arts venue, and have been providing production to supplement in-house equipment for a number of shows.

It was a quiet time in the studio, which was used to install new equipment and improve the facilities. I produced a radio edit of Emily Barker's single Nostalgia, and mixed a live version of Look Out For My Love which features on Emily's bandcamp web site.
